Cream Rises to the Top

For 2019, I’m putting forth an effort to be more intentional in my actions as it relates to living out my dreams. When you’re trying to make/find your place in the world sometimes your vision gets a little cloudy and you seek clarity through the words and experiences of others.

Today, I ran across this dope interview from one of my favorite stylists by the name of Apuje Kalu. I’ve been following this man for a while and he definitely puts in major work as a stylist and creative director. You may not know his name right off, but you definitely know his work. His clientele includes the likes of Ne-Yo, Jay Ellis and Yvonne Orji of Insecure fame, Jussie Smollett, Kofi Siriboe and numerous other musicians, actors, and celebrities. In talking with Justin Michael Williams, host of the podcast Motivation for Black People, Apuje details his journey from a career in IT to dressing the stars.

One of the most important lessons I took away was that everyone starts somewhere and each journey is different. "Cream rises to the top", another gem I took away from Apuje's talk. What that means to me is that your greatness will always shine through if you're willing to work for it. “There’s enough work out here for all of us, and what is for me is what is for me!" Apuje says. "But, you have to put in work. Come with the same drive and energy to a paid job as you would a free job," Translation: make yourself known for what you do, and put your best foot forward in every situation.

You never know who is watching you and what doors can be opened up to you from sharing your journey. I thank Apuje for sharing his wisdom and his transparency. Reminds me to never give up, and keep reaching!
