Picture it: it’s 2001, and you're at the American Music Awards reporting live from the red carpet.
You’ve never seen all the hottest stars in music in one place and you watch in awe as they pass you. N’Sync, Destiny’s Child, Toni Braxton, Dr. Dre. Then, you see it, and you can’t believe your eyes. There stands Britney Spears dressed in head-to-toe denim: We’ve all seen it: double denim, the Canadian Tuxedo, cowboy chic, whatever you want to call it. It can either go really right or reealllly left (think and Justin Timberlake).
In recent years there’s been a resurrection of the all denim look with some much needed improvements. The fashion world has gone beyond the jean jacket and dad jeans look to slimmer, more tapered cuts in dark and vintage washes.
What really makes the look a success is the fit and simplicity. One shouldn’t have an oversized fit with three layers of denim. Pairings with longline tees, chambray shirts and button downs in every color are very popular. Two piece combos are also a great alternative. A chambray shirt and jeans in contrasting washes (light usually looks better on the top), or mixing black and white denim never looks out of place.
Stars like Miguel, Kendrick Lamar, and Kanye are all masters of mixing simplicity and personality to create a unique look all their own. Take cues from them or create a look all your own.
